Videos | Interviews with John Caedan

March 10, 2015 - Laurel, MD
Discussion of
The White Sky
on the evening of first draft completion.
Interviewed by Paul Donohue

An extended interview    {36 minutes}

With the freezing (completion) of the first draft of his novel The White Sky, John Caedan sat for this discussion of the plot, characters, and setting of the book, and his process writing it. Mr. Caedan spoke with Paul Donohue at his home in Laurel, Maryland. Items on the set: top shelf whiskey/whisky, and (with apologies to listeners) a relentless cricket. Advisory they spend a certain amount of time discussing the sexual content of the book.
January 10, 2016 - Edgartown, Martha's Vineyard, where John Caedan
is taking a winter hiatus in a summer place.
Discussion of Mr. Caedan's books, his process, his mission
Interviewed by Austin Donohue, Firewalk Productions
xx
What drives strivers?     {3min}
Purposefulness. I choose to show those moments - larger than life - Mila and Andrés, artists shaking up their art - the moment when two people risk - everybody has a story and impulse - Mila's reaction to her risking - motivations in The White Sky
Authenticity     {3min}
When you get naked with another person, do you risk being authentic? Are they going to be real or not? I write about that. "Help me be wide awake."
Is it erotica?     {3min}
It is not 'erotica' as in the genre. I don't stop the scene at the door of the bedroom. But I make it about the characters. Pornography is boring. Full drama, but can be the small turn of events.
My books    {3min}
Short story moments, The Preludes, The White Sky, what was the path and sequence?
How is it when characters reappear?    {3min}
"I love them too much to let them go!" It's not a series. Not about super heroes.
The White Sky    {5min}
Writing timeline. Colorado to Maryland. June 2014 to March 2015. Is it two books? The power of writing, itself. I interact with the characters. They are alive.
Can I have both, please?    {4min}
The use of the descriptor "love in bed." It's an aspired destination. Sex, love and romance in the current culture, positive and negative. "Wouldn't you like to have it?" Contrary: "Don't put love and sex together." Kaarin, in The White Sky is an activist for it.
New York City and Martha's Vineyard    {3min}
"Making it" in New York. Inwood. Tribeca. The Vineyard: creatives and powerful creators.
The White Sky what to expect     {3min}
Four people at a moment of criticality. Also: the reveal of Andrés and Mila in bed. Explicit. Choice to read their events in bed it or not. Write sex with same tone and respect as the main plot.
"Why is Love in Bed your mission?"    {3min}
The conflux of people mating. I chose this mission as a pre-teen. Observation of couples fascinated me from the start. My life's mission. We owe it to reality to experience deeply. The physical intensity of sex is huge compared to ordinary life. Go where the power is. Love and Sex.
Martha's Vineyard    {2.5min}
Winter, 2015-16.
Get's under your skin. You might become a creature of the beach. North Atlantic drama. Outer Lands terrain, flora and fauna. The oaks are different here.

January 3, 2016 While in Martha's Vineyard, you have to find the waves, even if the temperature is in the low 20s! So cold.Careful: Volume gets loud at the :58 mark when the camera turns into the wind.
Handmade books    {1min}
Beautiful books. I need the tangible edition published. The design: loose-leaf sewn with muga silk, cover of handmade red cotton, torn paper, silk stitching, exposed. Loose pages on purpose.

A glance at the hand-made Special Edition of my book Eyes Full of Light and Laughter.
At the boundary    {3.5min}
The implication of "the edge" as boundary.
Mila "needed to establish the line." The tactile of a handmade book is related to the process of writing.
Meet with impact    {2min}
A moment of rightness, "they go." A positive battle. I believe in narrative, larger than life, driven by purpose from underneath.
Chilmark    {1.5min}
Setting for The White Sky.
